Start with a reliable skip list
Give every skip a unique number and a clear state: available, assigned, on hire, in maintenance or retired. A simple total is misleading if damaged or missing skips are still counted as ready for work.

Separate 'in use' from 'ready to use'
A skip at a customer site might be earning, overdue or waiting for collection. A skip in the yard might be ready, reserved, damaged or held back by missing information. Those distinctions are more useful than one headline percentage.
Set targets that match your own hire periods, skip mix, disposal turnaround and demand. There is no single sensible utilisation target for every operator.
Turn the list into action
Review collection requests, long hires, skips waiting to return and assets with no clear reason for being unavailable. Open the related customer or job before deciding what to schedule next.
Record both skips in an exchange—the one coming back and the one going out. Missing either side makes the yard and customer-site lists unreliable.

Measure against your own earlier results
Use a consistent period to compare asset states, completed movements and failed jobs. Allow for seasonal demand, new skip purchases and changes in the work mix.
The useful question is whether more skips have a clear state and next action—not whether a convenient percentage looks impressive.

There is no responsible universal figure. A suitable range depends on hire duration, asset mix, disposal turnaround, maintenance and local demand. Build a baseline from your own reliable records.
Does every skip need GPS?
No. Reliable operational tracking starts with unique asset identities and controlled movement events. Skiptastic does not claim physical GPS is fitted to each skip.
How do exchanges affect asset accuracy?
The collected and replacement skips must be identified separately. Recording only one side leaves the yard and customer-site states unreliable.
